Yves Vaage: from Norway's top flight to a top-10 Xavier, the long way

Yves signed his first pro contract with Strømsgodset, a club in Norway's top division. His first two seasons of college soccer still gave him very few minutes. For his third move he worked with GSX and chose Xavier, in the BIG EAST. Today Xavier is unbeaten and ranked No. 8 in the country by TopDrawerSoccer. This is how it happened, with the dates and the numbers.

Where he started

Yves calls himself a late bloomer. He moved from Stabæk to Strømsgodset in the spring of 2021, and spent his whole junior career there: 64 matches for Strømsgodset II, 24 of them in PostNord-ligaen, and a key role in the U19 team that in 2023 won the club's first ever Norwegian title at that level.

"I got my chance in Godset's junior team when I wasn't trusted at Stabæk. Godset saw that I had something, which not many others did."Yves Vaage, on godset.no (translated from Norwegian)

In the winter of 2024 he trained with the first team, and on his 20th birthday, at the preseason camp in Marbella, he signed his first professional contract.

"It feels absolutely amazing. It's something I have worked for for a very long time."Yves Vaage, on signing his contract (godset.no, translated from Norwegian)

On paper, the level was there. A player with that background usually expects to arrive in the US and play.

The hard part

In August 2024 he joined SMU, a Division I program that finished that season 12-3-6. Yves did not play a single match. After a summer back in Norway with Asker, he moved to Gardner-Webb for 2025. The team went 13-3-2, and he played 9 matches with 2 starts, 1 goal, 2 assists and 360 minutes. Two of those assists set up goals by Javan Ochieng, now at Liberty with GSX.

Two Division I programs, two seasons, very few minutes. The problem was not his level. It was the fit: the role the coach had in mind for him and the players already in his position.

What GSX did

Pablo González, from the GSX founding team and a former NCAA Division I player, led Yves's case from start to finish. GSX guided the process with him:

  • Profile and video: a new profile and highlight video, built to show coaches what he had already done at the top level in Norway.
  • The right programs: a shortlist of universities where an experienced centre-back fit the roster, and direct contact with their coaches.
  • Every call prepared: Yves went into each conversation knowing what to ask, starting with the role the coach saw for him.
  • Choosing well: GSX helped him compare his options one by one; Yves talked to each coach and decided.

The result: after two seasons with almost no minutes, Yves was the one choosing.

Why Xavier

Yves chose Xavier for its sporting project: a BIG EAST program with a staff that wanted him in the back line. On December 10, 2025, Xavier University announced Yves as one of eight additions to its 2026 roster. Head coach John Higgins explained why:

"He will bring a lot of experience to our back line. He has had a great career back home and is eager to prove himself at the college level. He has all the tools to play anywhere across the back line for us."John Higgins, Xavier head men's soccer coach

Yves arrives as a junior, so he still has seasons ahead of him.

The choice is looking good. As of October 6, 2026, Xavier is unbeaten at 8-0-2, with seven shutouts in ten matches, and is ranked No. 8 in the country by TopDrawerSoccer and No. 18 in the United Soccer Coaches poll. In 2025, the team had finished 5-6-4.

Yves has played 4 matches, with 1 start and 69 minutes, in his first season. It is not a finished story. It is a player earning his place in one of the best teams in the country, with time still on his side.

What his path teaches

  • Level does not guarantee minutes. Before you sign, ask the coach what role they see for you and who else plays your position.
  • A transfer is a second chance, not a failure. Many players find their right program on the second or third try.
  • Options change everything. With more than one option, Yves could choose the program and the role, instead of taking the first door that opened.
  • Experience is something you can sell. Xavier's coach valued exactly what Yves had built in Norway.
  • Your eligibility clock keeps running. Every move should bring you closer to playing, not just to a better name.
