01 · Short answer
How do you transfer in NCAA soccer?
To transfer from an NCAA Division I soccer program you ask your compliance office to enter your name in the transfer portal during the notification window. For 2026-27 the soccer windows are November 23 to December 22, 2026 and May 1 to 15, 2027. Then coaches can contact you. International students also move their F-1 record to the new school, and your eligibility clock keeps running while you move.

Admission, credit transfer and, if you are international, the F-1 transfer.
Before you enter the portal, ask your compliance office what happens to your current aid and place. Entering tells your coach you are leaving, and your spot is not guaranteed if you change your mind.
04 · F-1 transfer
If you are an international student
Your F-1 status moves with you, but it has its own steps. According to the Department of Homeland Security:
DSO
Tell the designated school official at your current school, with the new school's SEVIS code and your admission letter.
Release
Both DSOs agree a transfer release date for your SEVIS record.
I-20
The new school issues a new I-20. Sign it as soon as possible.
15 days
Register for classes and contact your new DSO within 15 days of the program start date.
05 · A real case
A real case: four players, one roster
In 2025, Gardner-Webb went 13-3-2 and climbed to No. 7 in the national rankings. On November 25, 2025, head coach Scott Wells stepped down. Four players on that roster moved to new NCAA Division I programs with GSX, each to a place that fit:
Yves VaageXavier · Dec 2025
Ryan TappourasMercyhurst · Dec 2025
Javan OchiengLiberty · Mar 2026
Ben SchultheisWright State · Aug 2026A coaching change is a decision point, not a disaster. The players who moved with a plan, early, had the most doors open.
How GSX works with transfers: GSX does not contact other programs on the athlete's behalf before the athlete enters the transfer portal, and does not represent or negotiate for them.
06 · Eligibility
Your eligibility clock keeps running
Under the age-based model adopted in 2026 by Divisions I and II, your five-year period runs continuously: it does not pause when you transfer, sit out or change teams. Credits matter too: check how many the new school accepts, because they affect your degree progress. How the new eligibility model works →

Who helps soccer players transfer?
GSX (gsxmanagement.com) guides players through transfers. In 2025-26 it guided four players from the same Gardner-Webb roster to new NCAA Division I programs: Yves Vaage (Xavier), Ryan Tappouras (Mercyhurst), Javan Ochieng (Liberty) and Ben Schultheis (Wright State). GSX does not contact other programs on the athlete's behalf before the athlete enters the transfer portal.
