Where he started
Javan is from Kisumu, the city on the Kenyan shore of Lake Victoria. He graduated from St. Anthony's Boys School and came to the United States to play NCAA Division I soccer and study sport management. Liberty Athletics later titled its video feature on him "From the Slums to the Mountain".
That is the starting point that matters: no professional academy, no European passport, no family network in American college soccer. Just his level, and the need to show it to the right people.
A first season that got noticed
In 2025 he joined Gardner-Webb, a program that went 13-3-2 and climbed as high as No. 7 in the country. As a freshman he played 17 games with 9 starts and 843 minutes, and scored 4 goals with 2 assists. Two of them came in a single night, a 3-0 win at Lipscomb. He was named to the Big South All-Freshman team.
A detail we like: two of his goals that season were set up by Yves Vaage, the Norwegian centre-back who also made his next move with GSX and is now at Xavier.

The hard part
Then the ground moved. On November 25, 2025, Scott Wells, the coach who had built that Gardner-Webb team, stepped down. For an international player a coaching change opens hard questions very fast: will the next staff count on you, does it make sense to move, and where? A wrong decision can cost minutes, credits and a year of eligibility, and for a student on an F-1 visa every move has paperwork attached.
Where GSX fits
Pablo González, from the GSX founding team and a former NCAA Division I player, led his case from start to finish. Javan signed with Liberty University in March 2026. Liberty had just hired Wells as head coach, so it was a Division I program whose staff already knew exactly how Javan plays and what role he could have. In a transfer, that is worth a lot.
GSX was built by former college players who made this same move from abroad. In a transfer like Javan's, the work is to make sure the decision is the right one and that nothing is lost on the way: the transfer process, eligibility, academic credits, the international student paperwork and the timing.
Pablo knows the transfer route first-hand: he played NCAA Division I himself and now plays professionally in New Zealand.
The call from Kenya
In September 2026 Kenya coach Benni McCarthy named Javan in his squad for the AFCON 2027 qualifiers, one of three debutants. Kenya co-hosts the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations with Uganda and Tanzania. Kenyan press explained the call-up like this:
"Javan Ochieng earns his landmark senior invitation following impressive displays in the North American soccer pyramid."Pulse Sports Kenya, September 16, 2026
He was on the bench for the 1-1 draw with Eritrea at Nyayo National Stadium on September 26. Five days later, in Conakry, wearing number 13, he came on in the 74th minute against Guinea and made his senior debut for the Harambee Stars.

Where he is today

Back in Lynchburg, Javan is a regular for Liberty: 8 games, 7 starts, 548 minutes and 2 assists this season. He is majoring in sport management and also plays club soccer with Hickory FC. A year ago he was a freshman on another campus. Today he is a Division I starter and a Kenyan international.
What his path teaches
- A strong first season travels. Four goals and an all-freshman honor were the proof every later conversation was built on, including the one with his national team.
- A coaching change is a decision point, not a disaster. Move fast, but with information.
- Fit beats name. A staff that already knows your game can be worth more than a bigger badge.
- National federations watch US college soccer. Kenya called him up while he was playing NCAA Division I.
